desktop background

recently, i lost the ability to change my desktop background color, etc.
after opening appearences and themes>desktop>appearences..i can select any
color, or picture--apply>okay....then nothing changes...my background is
white and stays white. i would rerun my software but i upgraded with the
sp2 and therefore can't reload my original cd.
how can i regain my ability to change my background colors. i can live
with default blue...just not the white.

Try a System Restore back to a point before the problem started.

Try creating a new user profile. If it works ok in the new profile copy
the data from the old to the new and delete the old.
