For Windows XP Professional
===================

1. Click Start - Run - type GPEDIT.MSC and press Enter
2. Expand to User Configuration - Administrative Templates - Control Panel -
Display
3. On the right-side pane double-click the entry "Prevent Changing Wallpaper"
4. If the value is set to "Not Configured" or "Enable" then set it to
"Disable"

For both Home & Professional edition
========================

1. Click Start - Run - type REGEDIT and press Enter
2. Expand to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\
Explorer\ActiveDesktop
3. On the right side pane - check if there is an entry
"NoChangingWallpaper". Set its value to 0 by double-clicking or delete the
entry.

If that doesn't help then read what Microsoft has to say about this and
resolution:

Article published by Microsoft regarding the problem:
=====================================================
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921049/

You can try if neither of above works:
======================================
A key in your registry is probably pointing to a deleted file refered to as
desktop.html

If you go into your regedit and follow this path: HKEY_CURRENT
USER/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/WINDOWS/CURRENTVERSION/POLICIES/SYSTEM

In there you may see a key that points to the C:\Windows\Web\desktop.html

If you see that key DELETE IT. Your virus software probably found this
hijack desktop viruz and deleted the infected file already.

Hope this help, let us know!

then I went to the microsoft website and follwed thier fix. This got back my
wallpaper but the icons now have a white box around the bottom of them with
the name of the program. I tried to change the color setting but have no

Open the System applet in Control Panel, choose the Advanced tab, and
click Settings in the Performance section. Turn on the "Use drop shadows
for icon labels on the desktop option", and click Ok.

Four things are required for transparent icon backgrounds:

1) System Properties>Advanced>Performance Settings>VisualEffects - check
"use drop shadows for icon labels".
2) Right-click on Desktop ->Arrange Icons by>Lock Web items must be cleared.
3) If you have any web content on your desktop, transparency won't work.
To check for web content: Display Properties>Desktop>Customize
Desktop>Web - make sure all checkboxes are clear.
4) Wallpaper must be an image file, not html.

Follow these steps:

First, make sure that "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop" is
checked. To check this, right-click on My Computer and choose Properties.
Click Advanced tab and click Settings button under "Performance" heading.
Here, make sure that the above said option is checked under "Visual Effects"
tab.

Second,"Lock Web Items on Desktop" option is unchecked. For this,
right-click on an empty area of Desktop, point to Arrange Icons By - and
uncheck "Lock Web Items on Desktop" if already checked.

Third, there should be no Web Items on the desktop which sometimes we get
through "Save as Desktop Item" option under IE. To check this, right-click on
an empty area of Desktop - click on Properties - then click on Desktop -
click Customize Desktop button - click the Web tab and uncheck all the items
under "Web Pages" list.

Lastly, the wallpaper you are currenly using should be an image like ".JPG"
or ".BMP" not HTML type web page.

Hope this help, let us know!

Thank you for your suggestions.
I checked all the things you suggested and they were all in order. The white
boxes are still there.

Thank you for your suggestions.
I checked the things you suggested and they were all okay. Nothing in those
settings was out of order so I was unable to fix the problem.

Try delete all the web items under Display Properties except My Current Home
Page.

Hope this help, let us know!
