desktop background disappears

I am running XPsp2, fully patched. Occasionally (maybe once or twice a
month), when I come back from lunch and hit the ctrl-alt-del to turn off the
screen saver and bring up the unlock window, I notice that the background is
missing. Instead of the picture I usually have there it is the standard
blue. After I unlock the workstation all of my icons and shortcuts are
there, but the background remains the same blue. I use BGInfo to display
certain information on the desktop and all of that is gone. I can't seem to
see anything unusual in the eventlogs, nothing different from the day before
when this didn't happen. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

I use UltraVNC to administer my workstations and it automatically disables
the wallpaper on the remote machine to conserve bandwidth. Perhaps someone
is doing maintenance during lunch.

No VNC or other remote in the house. Remote assistance and remote access are
both unchecked, no lunchtime maintenance being done remotely. Anything else
that may be turning off the wallpaper?
