desktop and toolbar gone how do I get some files before formating

I have a compaq crap master 5062 running win 2000nt . When I boot it up there
is no desktop or toolbar. I am going to format the drive but I need to get
some pub files first. I can open task manager. I have tried a usb flash and
tried to move files to a 3.5 while in new task screen but didn't work. I also
got some regedit repair program for kellysomething or other and tried those
but they did not work either. Thank you
 
Remove HD and attach it to working Windows machine. Make sure you have AV
and all patches before you do it. Copy files you want, move HD back.
