DeskJet 712C won't print on new computer

I recently hooked up my DeskJet 712C and it won't print.
There is no error message. The only thing I can see is
went I check the status of the printer, it says "error
p..." XP comes with the driver for this printer and I
have installed it, but still nothing. My printer is over
a year old and HP wants to charge me $25 to help me.
Hoping someone here has an idea.

How did you install the printer? What happened when you connected the
printer to the PC?
