Desk top icon for task bar

How do I find and get a desk top icon into my task bar? I
had it on my old computer with Windows 98 but not my new
one with Windows XP.

Hi, Doug. Could you be a little more descriptive? What desktop icon do
you want on your taskbar? If you right-click the taskbar and then look
at the toolbar fly-out, you'll have quite a few choices of additional
toolbars, Quick Launch, My Computer, etc. Is that what you mean?
Otherwise, just enable Quick Launch (from the Toolbars submenu as
described above) and then right-click and drag the desired icon to
Quick Launch. If this isn't what you mean, please repost with more
details.

If you mean you want it in the Quick Launch area, right of Start, then
just drag it up and drop it there
