Not sure I understand the question (or that the other two replies did):
if you mean what's best for you to look at while designing the
page/site, whatever you like... if you mean what's best for people who
will be viewing the site, use 800x600 -- there are still a LOT of people
out there who will visit your site at that resolution and if you make it
impossible to view your site without side-scrolling you are going to
annoy a lot of those people.

resolution are pretty much going to be browsing maximized -- honestly, I
can't recall ever seeing anyone at that resolution who wasn't, although
I don't pretend I've seen a statistically valid sample of all users...

Funny. I guess it's where you look. I don't recall seeing any "ordinary"
surfers at any resolution who browse maximized. Apply users never do (there
is no such option).
In addition to that. Even maximized at 800, you will get scrollbars on a
page with 800px wide content. I just design for 760px and let it go at
that.

| | great - gets rid of almost all the junk on the screen. Dunno why I never
