Deregister Windows XP

Guest

Hi,
Previously I had an earlier version of Windows XP running on my PC (not
OEM). I Activated and Registered this. Now I have installed a later version
( which included SP2) which was a gift from my sister. (I realise this is
fairly pointless). I deleted the old partition (and therefore all files and
trace of previos XP version) and have created a new partition to reclaim my
PC disk space.

I wish to give my previous version to an uncle so that he can install it on
his machine.

My question is: How to deactivate/deregister the previous version so that
my uncle can activate /register it as his, or is this not a problem?

Thanks for any help.

You already did by installing the new version.
(There is no "deregistration process" - just removal from one computer and
installation onto a new one. (given the facts you have..))

There is no "de-activation" process, as such.

Assuming a retail license (OEM licenses are not transferable),
simply remove WinXP from the computer it is currently on and then
install it on the new computer. If it's been more than 120 days since
you last activated that specific Product Key, the you'll most likely be
able to activate via the Internet without problem. If it's been less,
you might have to make a 5 minute phone call.

Here are the facts pertaining to activation:

Since you say "not OEM" I assume you purchased it yourself and it is a
retail version. In that case you may transfer it to another computer as
long as it has been removed from the old one. Activation on the new
computer is all that is needed.

You activate the installation of XP.
You register YOU as the owner of XP. Registration is irrelevant.
