DEP prevents playing avi file!

Hello,
I have downloaded some video (avi) file from the web.
When trying to play it using Media Player it involves the Data Execution
Prevention.
What can be wrong?

It could be a virus injected into the avi

What about antivirus software?
Is it capable of detecting virus inside avi file?
I use NOD32.

Are you suggesting the antivirus installed on PC (updated of course) is less
reliable from some online services?

The avi file I have is amost 400 MB and uploading it to the online service
does not seem good option to me.
Also, I installed VLC player and can watch this file without a problem.
The problem is caused by Windows Explorer only.
Even when searching for other avi files on my hardrive, Explorer deploys DEP
as soon as it comes accross that file (without openning it!)

If you are convinced that the file is free of malicious code then you
can disable DEP system wide via the boot.ini file or you can disable DEP
for select programs in the Data Execution Prevention settings, look in
the Windows help files for more information. Of course this is at your
own risk, if the file does contain malicious code and if the code does
execute while DEP is disabled don't come back here crying.

It is a feature of explorer that it can display certain things about a
file, without you opening it for viewing. Some of these things involves
the codec you've installed on your computer that is used to decode the
file. If the codec/file is bugged, strange things can happen.

I have tested and the problem looks bigger.
It does not matter which avi file I use.
Even commercial .avi files supplied with the programs cause the same
problem.
As soon as I click on the file (it does not matter left or right mouse
click) it invokes DEP!!!
It looks like DEP does not like avi files at all!
I cannot even rename it without having DEP on me!.
However, when I change avi extention to something else there is not a
problem.
I am using Win XP PRO SP3

What program is associated with AVI files?

Try changing the program association and see if the problem goes away

As I said before it does not require opening the .avi file to have that
error.

It is not a virus in the avi file. I get this error even when creating my own
avi files in movie maker!!!!!!!

Hi Jack,

I have the same problem with avi files. It is a microsoft caused problem. I
can create an avi file in windows movie maker and get the same problem. Can
you imagine that!

It may not be a virus, but you cannot conclude that from what you know.
Most often it is a bad codec, but a virus can also trigger it.

I had the same problem! Masage - D E P and following closing all win.
explorer Windows
And the decision on the problem was - to remove "ACE Mega CoDecS
Pack" and to instal "K-Lite Codec Pack". That's all!!!
No more DEP Mesages! sorry for bad English.
