Demoting last DC results in "Could not find domain controller for this domain"

Demoting last DC results in "Could not find domain controller for this domain." This is the last DC in the sub.domain.com domain. I can ping "site.domain.com", I can ping server.site.domain.com. This server is also the DNS server for this, which forwards to domain.com. From the domain.com DC i can ping "site.domain.com," can nslookup it, all that jazz
I'm doing domain consolidation, and need to leave and remove site.domain.com and join the server as a DC of domain.com, but it wont demote! I initially thought this is DNS (and it very well still could be), but resolution is working fine, nothing looks funny. I set the dns server in TCP/IP to both the local server and the main dns server at domain.com, still getting same error during DC promo. Any help'd be appreciated

Thanks

Have you marked check box "This is the last domain controller" in the
wizard?
