For some reason one of my applications keeps on starting itself up. I've
exited out of it several times but it won't stop starting up. I even tried
to uninstall it, but then I keep getting a message that says:

One or more necessary files appear to be invalid. This is generally caused
by a corrupted installation. Please try downloading and installing LimeWire
again. If the problem persists, please copy and past the message below and
send it to: (e-mail address removed). Thank you.

And then it has an error report on the end of that.

What's going on and how can I stop this?

Talk to Limewire tech support or uninstall it.

Limewire is linked to Explorer, so that every time you access a web
page, it gets ready to download stuff. Or else the trial period has
expired, and Limewire is nagging you to register (buy). Or else...
Talk to Limewire tech support or uninstall it.

You say you've already uninstalled Limewire. However, uninstall _never_
removes everything. It leaves a bunch of stuff in place. In this case,
part of Limewire is still there, and tries to launch the program. this
is the part that is giving you the error message.

So, immediately (without rebooting) run a registry cleaner. (See
footnote) The error message merely means that Limewire is trying to
restart and can't do so because some of the files it needs have been
deleted (see footnote). You will also have to manually remove some
files: go to the Limewire folder (you should find it in Programs), and
delete all remaining files.

If this is too daunting, you'll have to take the machine to a tech to
fix it. You may as well ask to have your machine thoroughly cleaned at
the same time -- that, have the tech search for and remove viruses, etc.
You should clean up the machine regularly -- it's preventive
maintenance, like regular oil changes on your car.

Footnote on deletion:
When you move an item to the recycle bin, Windows marks the file name as
"deleted", but the file is still intact. When you empty the bin, Windows
marks the space used by the file as available. However, the actual file
data is still on the disk until a new file is written over it.

Footnote on cleaning the registry:
I use Registry Mechanic, which costs about $40, and is worth every penny
IMO. But there are others. Most of the free ones require that you delete
registry entries manually, which makes them dangerous to use.

Put simply, a registry cleaner looks for references to deleted files,
and gives you the option of deleting those references. Then when you
reboot, Windows will not try to start those programs again. You should
clean the registry regularly. Windows uses the registry during boot, and
will try to find the deleted files, so a lot of invalid references will
slow down the boot, and Windows takes long enough as it is.

Some people think that tools such as these aren't needed by the home
user, but I disagree.

Good luck.

Go to Start Menu, All Programs, Startup, and delete the Limewire Startup
selection.
