Dell memory problem

Hi all,

I have an old Dell Dimension 3000 PC sitting around and I decided to
upgrade it a bit. It currently has two sticks of DDR3200 400 mhz ram,
I bought a 1 gig stick of ddr3200 400mhz to bump this up a bit. But
when I put this in, I get the beep code error to say RAM malfunction.
I tested the RAM in another machine and it works fine. According to
the Dell manual, it can accept 1 gig sticks.
Anyone have an idea why it's erroring?

Did you get the memory from Dell? Is it compatible with what's in there?
Did the vendor guarantee compatibility? Does it work ok by itself in
that PC? Sounds like it doesn't get to the operating system, so it can't
be Windows Xp related.

Did you remove the old RAM from both slots first?

Hi Jim,

I removed all RAM from both slots, then tried a mixture. If a 128mb
stick is in with the 1gig then the system only reads 128mb.

Does it read 1 GB with just one stick in? Put the RAM in
slot 0 and just skip the 128. Also, what step is the BIOS?

Why ask here? Memory not working has nothing to do with the OS.

Take it elsewhere.

Uh, if you look at the history of this NG, it is all about hardware;
this thread seems entirely appropriate here.

Hey, No consequence. Technically you might be right, but I wonder who
appointed you to be the posting police. Why not help the guy?

I have found that lots of Dell computers require proprietary memory (often
made by Samsung) and in essence you MUST buy the memory from Dell.
