Dell AIO 922 Communication Problem

1. Affected machine is a Dell desktop platform running Windows XP
Professional SP3.
2. The 922 printer worked fine on the machine prior to a 922 driver
update installed 30 Sep via Microsoft Update.
3. Error received is: Dell Photo AIO Printer 922 - USB Port;
Communication Not Available.
4. Received error is odd in that the computer detects the printer via
the USB port. With cable connected, Printers and Faxes indicates
printer as Ready. With cable disconnected, printer is shown as
Offline.
5. Computer has two USB connected printers attached. When swapping
the two cables between the two printers at the printer ends, the other
printer continues to work fine while the same communication error is
indicated for the 922.
6. Another similar computer in the office also has a 922 installed
and it works fine on that computer. When this printer is connected to
the offending computer (1 above), the same communication error is
indicated. When the 922 that is normally connected to the offending
computer is connected to this computer, the printer works fine. This
computer also had its driver updated via Windows Update and it, too,
caused the printer to stop working but after a driver re-installation,
this computer/922 combination began to work fine.
7. 922 driver uninstall/reinstall has been tried many times on the
offending computer both from a Dell download and from the original
CDROM. The communication not available message occurs after each
reinstall attempt. Uninstall/reinstall performed both as a user with
Administrator privileges and as user Administrator.
8. From the above test results, it is apparent that there is nothing
wrong with the printer, cable, or USB port on the offending computer
yet a communication error continues.

Any help to resolve this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thank
you.

I had the same issue with my girlfriends mother's PC. I rebuilt it with XP
after her sister managed to infect the system with the lovely antivirus XP
madness.

Anyhow, the printer was working and I had turned on automatic updates so her
sister could have less of a chance to infect the system. Sure enough I am
here today and the system cannot find the printer, same symptoms as the user
below.

I finally went to add printer and right clicked the device shown, the AIO
922, and was prompted to install drivers??? After this, the printer now
works but kicks out some error everytime I try to print a page, then
succesfully prints.
