Dell 1905FP contrast setting?

A

Andrew Barss

I just bought a Dell 1905FP 19" LCD monitor. When I push the
hardware button for settings, there is a line for contrast, but
it's greyed out, and I can't figure out how to set the contrast
setting other than the factory default.

Also, this is my first non-CRT monitor, so tips for setting it
for maximal readability would be much appreciated!

I just got this monitor also... Describe more what youre talking about.. Are
you referring to the 4 buttons along the bottom , right side? The one on
the left is the hardware setting. When pressed, I get a tall rectangle on
the screen with the following settings:

Exit
Brightness
Positioning
Image Settings
Color Settnings
OSD settings
language
Audio
factory reset

Nowhere do I see contrast. So, describe more.

That's the same menu I get, although Positioning, Image Settings, and
Audio are grayed out, and if I move up and down the menu using the two
= and - keys, the cursor will skip over them.

If you scroll down to Brightness, and then hit the menu button,
you get

Exit
Brightness
Contrast

Here, Contrast is greyed outm thge the cursor will not land on it.

Really??

On mine, I can access and manipulate it the same way I do all the other
settings..... Thats weird.. If its truely inaccessible, after trying the
different key combo, Id contact Dell, and ask them to replace it. Although,
quite honestly, it comes with a presetting of 50, in the middle, and after
playing with it for awhile, it doesnt make much of a difference, and even
when it you get it functioning, I suspect youll wind up leaving it exactly
where it is now!

If your monitor is connected via DVI, you won't be able to adjust the
contrast settings. These only become available when using VGA.

Have you, or anybody else, compared the picture quality of this 1905fp
monitor when connected to the DVI port vs when connected to the VGA port?

I haven't, but I will, just to see the difference. I did have a
Hitachi CM721 connected to the analog port of the card (NVIDIA
GEForce 5200), and the picture quality was
pretty much as good as it was on a different machine with a Matrox G400.
