Delivery receipt

I can't seem to find a definitive answer as to what event
triggers a delivery receipt when mail is sent between two
entirely separate Exchange domains. In other words, we
are having reports that email has been sent to our domain,
and the sender has received a delivery receipt, but the
email does not appear to have ever reached our server. Is
the delivery receipt triggered when the mail leaves their
server, or is it triggered when it is received at our
server? Thanks!

I have always been under the impression that the mail
client actually triggers the delivery receipt. Perhaps
your client has a rule running that is deleting / moving
the mail before the user sees it, but the delivery receipt
is still being processed. I have turned off all deliver
receipts on my account, so I'm not sure, but doesn't the
receipt show up in the user's sent Items folder? If
that's the case, I would almost definitely figure it's the
client.

If you want to see where the email (in this case the
delivery receipt) came from, you can always view the
header information. (open the message, click view then
options and look in the 'internet headers' box). This
won't tell you who generated the message, but it will tell
you which mail server delivered the message to your mail
server. That would atleast give you a better idea.
