deletion within a document

in a Microsoft Word document I press the delete key, I then must press the Y
key in order to complete the deletion. How do I turn this off so that
pressing the delete key actually deletes the material?
 
In Word, click on Tools | Options | General | uncheck the two boxes for
WordPerfect help and navigation | OK.
