Deleting Temp files

I need to know how to delete the Temporary files and folders in Windows XP.
The computer I use is running Windows 98 and I delete these files by going to
start>run>I type in temp in the box and hit ok. It takes me to the temporary
files and folders site and I select all and then delete them all. Now when I
do that with my daughers computer which is running XP it takes me to a site
that has alot of other files and folders with the temp folders. I do not know
what to delete among these. I do not want to mess up and delete the wrong
thing. I want to make sure you understand that this is not the Temporary
Internet files that I am talking about. I delete them all the time on both
computers because they are the same. I also check the delete offline content
as well. So, if anyone can help me out there I would appreciate it.
Thanks,
Kemm

Here's where they are, with USER being the name of the account:

C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Local Settings\Temp

"Local Settings" is a hidden file so you have to unhide your files before
you go looking. You can delete all that's in there unless you have
Spywareguard enabled which will demand two of them.

If you have more than one user/account, you have to empty them all. I assume
you know it's a good idea to reboot before doing the deleting ...

There are 4-Temp variables on any XP system: 2 for System &
2 for each user (Temp & Tmp, which both point to the same dir).

The System Temp folder is C:\Windows\Temp
For each user, it will be located at
C:\Documents & Settings\'Username'\Local Settings\Temp

Also found throughout the System partition will be other types of
temporary content all subscripted with .tmp

Start | Run | temp | OK |
Opens >>>
C:\WINDOWS\Temp

Start | Run | %temp% | OK |
Will open >>>
C:\Documents and Settings\Daughters Name Here\Local Settings\Temp

Or whoever happens to be logged on at the time.

Same with...
Start | Run | %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp | OK

Anything in these two folders can be deleted. If anything is in use, XP
will not allow it to be deleted.

I usually redirect the System temp and each User temp to a common temp
folder, c:\temp. I then create a script which deletes the files in that
folder and place it in All Users Startup folder. That way it cleans all
the junk out prior to every logon (but not before any install program
that uses files placed there).

Right click on My Computer, Properties, click Advanced tab and
Environment variables button. Change the User & System temp variables to
a common location (you will have to log in as each user and change
each User temp variable, the System stays the same).

Use the Disk Cleanup utility in Windows XP (Accessories - System Tools
- Disk Cleanup).

Good luck
