I have internet explorer 8 and windows vista
I'd like to know how to delete the internet history

now when I start to enter a url (usually on typing the 2nd w : "ww..") a box appears underneath the address typing in box listing either my google history, internet history or favourites.

it doesn't delete when I delete internet history from either tools/delete browsing history or tools/internet options/delete with forms ticked etc or from the safe tab

and I've installed and ran this internet cleaner http://www.privacyeraser.com/free-internet-eraser.html and that doesn't seem to work either: old searches/pages from way back still appear !

I've seen an old pcreview thread
https://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-3036039.php

giving other utilities or suggesting to delete the index.dat file from C\document\username\cookies ... (seems harsh)

how please can I delete this stuff and why has internet 8 made it so hard to delete - why doesn't delete browsing history do what it says ?

many thanks

many thanks madxgraphics for prompt reply

I will try ccleaner later when I get back

I did see one post though that said ccleaner didn't work for them

http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/InternetExplorer/thread/1b7d0544-daf1-4abf-abf5-78649aa4392c

though I'm not sure if he's saying he didn't click the right delete options

If that doesn't work - then I wonder if I'd need to uninstall/ reinstall IE8 though I don't want to do that on a regular basis and I know IE8 isn't in my uninstall menu from control panel/uninstall programs

IE8 will be in updates. its not listed as a program in Vista, but rather in the update section. When you goto programs and features check the check box at the top to show updates aswell and you will see IE8 listed there.
