I open the History window, and click on erase history,
then click yes to the confirm button. Sometimes, the
screen just blinks, but no history is deleted. Usually
happens after a lot of surfing. Retain history is set to
0 days. Any Ideas? Will re-installing IE help?

With no IE windows open, try it from Control Panel> Internet Options>
General> Clear History.

You might need to delete the damaged History folder- a new one will be
created on restart.

Free History Eraser from
http://smartprotector.com/eraser/free-history-eraser.htm will delete the
History folder in Windows 9x,2K, XP.

Another program might be locking your history.

The ActiveX filter of McAfee (and possibly other) anti-virus programs can
interfere with the history function of IE. Just disable the ActiveX filter.
