on a USB connected hard drive (not the main one), I have a folder named:
9be2dbc03c57f44 that has a sub-folder "update" which I have tried to
delete/remove both with Shift+ Delete in explorer and with rd /s/q from a
command window. In every instance I get an error and "access is denied".
Short of reformatting, is there any way to get rid of this #@+% thing.

Les,

The folder name with random characters, is created when you install a MS Hotfix or SP. You can safely delete this folder, after taking ownership: http://www.winxptutor.com/ownership.htm

From the link I posted earlier:

"If you are running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, you must start the computer in safe mode, and then log on with an account that has Administrative rights to have access to the Security tab. To start Windows XP in Safe Mode, see this article How do I start Windows in Safe Mode?

For Microsoft Windows XP Professional, you need to disable Simple File Sharing, in order to see the Security tab. To disable simple file sharing, follow these steps: Click Start, and then click My Computer. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the View tab. In the Advanced Settings section, clear the Use simple file sharing (Recommended) check box. Click OK"
