when i first got vista i wanted to test my upgraded hard drive and ram so i
downloded some videos (pron)
now i'm stuck with some files that i can't delete
the error message states that the file names are to long and can't be
deleted, i tried to rename them but got the same message, i can't move the
files in fact i can't do anything with these files
i tried to restore my computer to a date prior to downloading these files
but i can't even do this

does anyone have any ideas on how i can get rid of these files

Maybe you could delete them in Safe Mode.

Are the video files nested deep in the folder structure something like
c:\myMachine\MyVideoFolder\MyVideoFiles\MyVideo.avi ? This is just an
example to show what I mean. Try changing all the folder names to something
like c:\mM\MVF\MM\M.avi What you need to try to do is get the total path
length down to less than 255 characters. With any luck you may be able to
delete the files now.

Couldn't you get the same effect by copying them to a folder lower
in the directory tree?

Possibly, but if he cannot edit/delete/rename due to the error message,
he might not be able to move/copy either. However, renaming the parent
folders would be a nice easy way to make the directory name shorter.

Honestly, I've never heard of a path that long before though. I've had
huge paths like 100 directories long just as a joke before. 'I, bet, you
,won't open, all, these, folders, just, to see, whats in side, ha, you,
actually did, man, you, need, to, get, a life, sometime, me, to, for,
making, all, these, folders, on, a, public, computer, but, hope, you,
just, don't, delete, the parent, directory, cause, it, is definitely,
worth, the, clicking, to, find, out, whats, inside, just, you, wait and,
see.

:)
I noticed after I posted that the OP said he can't do "anything" with
these files, including moving them.

I thank you for your imput, but alas, nothing works !!

My next thought is to restore the computer back to factory settings, or
