Deleting e-mail

how can I get rid of deleted e-mail? I will hit delete, and a line will
appear through it, but it won't go away. It does not move to the "Deleted"
folder. I have just loaded Microsoft onto a laptop, and am having strange
things happen. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
