I have two identical custom styles, and I want to delete one. I went to
Styles, drop down arrow, Manage Styles, Edit. I checked New Documents based
on this template, highlighted one of the duplicates, and clicked Delete.

It disappears, but when I open Word again, (I save changes to global
template) it returns. I am so frustrated. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks so much.

Just to provide a bit of support - I have tried the same and yes, they reappear.

I *think* (and I've been struggling desperately myself) the styles are linked to the document. They
can't actually be set globally so that every document sees one type of style set.

The option you are referring to adds style modifications to the attached
template; it doesn't remove a style that you are removing from a document.
You will have to delete the style (of the template) via the Organizer dialog
box. To open the Organizer, you can press Alt+F8, and then click the
Organizer button.
