Custom Styles

Working with Word 2003 I would like to create a list of styles that are
custom for our firm's formatting style. I understand that there are built in
styles that you cannot delete but when I customize a style, add it to the
template through the Modify | Add to template or through the organizer it
adds a list of about 20 styles that I don't want. Even when I modify a
Heading style and add it to the template it adds this list of styles and my
modifications are not there. I've deleted the Normal template so I have just
a basic 5 styles but when I add it once again replaces all of the styles with
this huge list.

Is there any work around?

There is, as long as the template will be used only in Word 2003 or 2007.

With the template open for editing, go to Tools > Protect Document. In the task
pane, check the box for "Limit formatting to a selection of styles". Click the
Settings link below that.

In the dialog that appears, uncheck any styles you don't want to have available
in documents based on that template. Click OK.

Click the "Start Enforcing Protection" button, and supply a password if you want
to prevent others from turning off the protection.

Save the template.

In documents based on this template, only the styles you chose (plus Normal,
which you can't exclude) will appear in the style list.

The only drawback of this is that if a document based on this template is opened
in Word 2002 or earlier, it will be completed locked and not editable, because
those versions don't know about style protection.
