Deleted pst file still appears in tree

Using XP Pro with Office/Outlook 2003

I deleted an old pst file from my F drive but it still appears in the
Outlook tree (in my D drive) & I have no option to delete it when I
right-click on it from the tree.

I tried closing/opening Outlook but it didn't make any difference. The file
still appears in the tree. How do I remove it?

Also ... if I copy/move a pst file from D to a new external hard drive (call
it K for now), what do I have to do to have Outlook running on D "see" it?

I read in another post about having to "point" to it using Tools > Services
(or Tools >Accounts) but when I try to find it all I can find is Tools >
Email Accounts. If that is the correct one, I don't know what options to
choose from there to make it work.

I'd appreciate any help on these.

Sounds like you have corrupted your Mail Profile
If with outlook closed you move the default pst to a new location, next time
you open outlook it will complain and ask you to browse to the pst.
If you have multiple pst's open in outlook, close the none default ones,
within Outlook, then move them, next time you open outlook, open the other
pst's within Outlook
Not sure how wise it is to locate a default pst on an external drive,
bearing in mind how tempremental some external connections can be.

Thanks for your response. The psts I moved are not the default (at least I
don't think so ... how can I tell?). "Inbox" is where all my new email
appears. It's not at the same level in the tree as "Mailbox" but the psts I
create are.

I create .pst files for each year & sometimes for special accounts. They all
appear when I open Outlook. When I need room on my D drive, I move them to
another hard drive, where they exist as an archive in case I need to check
them for something.

Since you say I corrupted my profile, I will try what you suggest to see if
that solves the problem. But I'm confused ... I thought Outlook had to be
closed to move pst files? I admit that may not have been the case when I
moved the older files since I didn't know about that at the time (which may
be how it got corrupted?). How do I move them within Outlook?

Please bear with me since I know just about enough to get myself in trouble
.... as witnessed by my post :) ...

Also ... any suggestion for my 2nd question re: getting Outlook to "point"
to a pst file I move to another hard drive?

Thanks!

You must never move or delete a PST file on your hard drive until you have
first closed it from your Outlook profile. Doing so will corrupt your
Outlook profile. You will not be able to remove the reference to this file
from this profile.
The profile corruption is minor and will not affect Outlook's function. If
you cannot live with the fact that this PST file reference will remain, you
will have to create a new Outlook profile.

I think you missunderstood, or I put it badly
The default pst cannot be closed, within Outlook (The default is the one
that receives your inbox mail, assuming no rules)
Other pst's can be.
You should only move a pst with Outlook closed.
However you mentioned Mailbox, are you on Exchange/IMAP?

Thank you all for your responses! I will sift through them & make the
recommended changes.
