deleted messages have a line though them but they don't go away

this is for my university email account running though outlook 2003. the
account type is imap/smtp. after i delete emails, they turn grey and get a
strikeout though them, but they dont go away. it makes my inbox look very
cluttered. this doesn't happen with my hotmail account which is also set up
in outlook 2003. how do you get rid of all these deleted emails and why does
this specific account type do this?
