If I can't retrieve these files through my recycle bin
how do I retrieve them?

If you actually deleted them from your computer completely and they aren't in the Recycle Bin, there isn't much you can do. Depending on your file system you may or may not be able to retrieve the files. I've used a program called Restorer 2000 on XP with NTFS (check this by going into My Computer and clicking the drive once, the file system will be shown in the Details pane). You can get a copy of the program at http://www.bitmart.net.

Hope that helps...

if you use System Restorer to restore your system to a prior day, (a
day before you wiped out your files) you should be back in business.
Good luck
