Deleted items remain in my inbox

I've set up Outlook to be my primary e-mail manager for my AOL account. It
seems to have done everything correctly, except I do not have a deleted items
in the new set of folders that I have for this account. Every time I try to
delete an item, it remains in my inbox and the letters are stricken through.
It does not move it to my deleted items and when I exit, it does not remove
it from the inbox either (though I have set it up that way). I've tried to
set up a rule to delete it, and I've tried to use the organize tool to get it
to remove the read items to the deleted items. I've also tried to create a
folder for deleted items within the set of folders created when I set up the
new account (for AOL mail). Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

It's because AOL is an IMAP account, NOT a POP mail server. You need to
go to Tools-Send and Receive, highlight the AOL account and click on
"Process Marked Headers" (assuming Outlook 2003, although I think
Outlook 2002 was very similar....)

Thanks. Actually, this old computer has Outlook 2000. Perhaps I should
upgrade and try again. Thanks for the advice.

In that case you need the "Remote Mail" menu AFAIR.....

Edit | Purge Deleted Items
You can add the purge deleted items button to your toolbar.
You can also set the view with IMAP to hide deleted messages.

You can also set the view with IMAP to hide deleted messages.
This would be incredibly useful in cleaning up my Inbox. How can I setup
Outlook to hide the deleted messages?

Nevermind, I just discovered it!

View -> Arrange By -> Current View -> Hide Messages Marked for Deletion

Could MS please enhance Outlook to have the feature like other IMAP mail
clients, such that when you "delete" a message in an IMAP folder instead of
just marking it as deleted outlook moves it to a designated folder?
