deleted items reappearing!

Help.

Many clients of ours are recently claiming that after they purge their
deleted items folder (outlook 2003), they reappear soon afterwards. We tried
it with cached mode and without (using exchange server 2003). The same thing
happens in OWA. I saw some previous posts, but no one offered a solution.

Any idea?

Thanks.

If they aren't recovering the deleted items themselves, then have a
look at what's running on your server. BEFORE someone logs on, check
the "Last Logged On By" column in the Mailboxes" view of the database.
Nobody but the mailbox owner should show up there (normally -- they
may have shared one or more of their folders, so pick someone that
hasn't done this). If you see the local system account in there, find
out why it's there.

What about Blackberries or other mobile devices that sync with the
mailbox?

I've also just had the 3rd report of this happening to some of our employees.
2 of the 3 are Blackberry users, this is a new server which we just moved 700
mailboxes over to about a month ago. 2 of the 3, one was a BB user one
wasn't, had messages return from the same time frame 8/31 - 9/6.

Each of the people reporting the problem have their mailboxes on different
info stores.

Exchange 2003 SP2 on Windows 2003 SP1
Clients are Outlook 2003 running in cached mode.

Thanks for any ideas.

I would suspect the Blackberry settings are somehow involved. Do the users have everything in the deleted items saved on the blackberry? Do they have the sync set to have the same info on both device and desktop?

After today, I am starting to believe that the Blackberry is involved too.
Here is some more info that I found today.

- One person does sync the deleted items, one person doesn't
- the person who doesn't have a Blackberry actually experienced something
different, long story but not important for this thread - but she has been
excluded from my troubleshooting
- I spoke to our Exchange admin in the UK and he is having the same issue
with one employee who also happens to be a Blackberry user, I don't know if
this person is syncing deleted items at the moment

That leaves me with 3 people all experiencing the same behavior and it is a
bit different than I understood it yesterday. It seems that the people are
simply moving mail from their inbox to another folder in Outlook (on the
server, not a pst). After some duration of time, the messages are moved from
their current location back to the Inbox. One of the employees had moved
messages to the deleted items folder, but hadn't empted the deleted items. So
they weren't purged, simply moved from the Inbox to the Deleted Items - after
a few days they were moved back to the inbox.

At this point, I'll be looking into BB settings but unfortunately none of
the users who are experiencing the behavior are at my location and I use a
Treo instead of a BB so any ideas of what to look for on the Blackberry are
appreciated.

Regards,
- Arron

First things first - if your company expects you to support Blackberry users, then they should supply you with one for testing and support purposes. Simple common sense. I would ask - no harm, no foul.

Otherwise, you need to work with one who has a blackberry and is somewhat tech savvy.

I agree, I should've mentioned that we have a group which support the BB's -
I just like to do as much troubleshooting as possible before pointing at the
BB as the issue. I get annoyed when people point to Exchange as the problem
before doing any troubleshooting so I like to do my due diligence before
offloading to someone else.

Thanks for your assistance - I'll post back if we come up with anything

Just an FYI that we have no blackberry users at our site, just some PocketPC
users, but none of those involved have them. Only desktop/laptop in office.
