Deleted Items folder emptied every couple of days

I am using Outlook with Hotmail, and the deleted items for this are getting
emptied every couple days, which makes me unhappy. Right-clicking on the
Deleted Items and looking at Auto-Archive, the settings are 'do not
auto-archive this folder' and 'the network administrator has not set
retention policy'. (I am a home user and not on a network.)

Under 'View - Arrange by: - Date'.

then why put emails into the "deleted items" folder if you want to keep
them? The idea of a "deleted items" folder is to put messages there that you
DON'T WANT TO KEEP!

I don't think you have any control over how frequently MSN empties the
deleted items folder on their server. Deleted means "I don't want it."

Thanks for the response. I thought that once I 'received' e-mail, the
messages were now on my computer, not on MSN's server....

Not for MSN (an HTTP account), nor for IMAP or Exchange accounts. Only with
POP accounts do messages get downloaded from the server to your local system
(with any permanence - technically, for MSN and IMAP accounts, a copy is
downloaded, but it's only a copy. The real message stays on the server
until you explicitly delete it).

I'm trying to decipher a possible solution in your reply but have not had
any luck. In my prior experience with Outlook, I have been able to decide
when to empty my deleted e-mail files. If this was not of use to Outlook
users, Outlook would automatically empty the deleted items file every time
Outlook was closed.

Okay, so this could explain why things seem to be operating a bit
differently than I expected with this e-mail account. Not the answer I was
hoping for but better than spending more hours trying to find the 'magical'
setting!
