Deleted files recovery program

I as playing with 'Restoration', recommended on the Eula site & have a
query.
If a folder or file is deleted, it remains on the HDD until over-written &
can be recovered with 'Restoration' prior to that.
Query - do those folders (& contents) or individual deleted files show as
used space or free space on the HDD Properties?

They show as free space on the HDD properties as windows only deletes the information in the File Allocation Table about where the file is stored although, even if the space on the hard drive is overwritten with another file it's still possible to get the original file back as traces of it are still there.

How can you recover those files? I have a shared folder icon but my files are not there.

Thanks, Steven, so they are actually taking up space, naturally, but shown
as free space as it's space available for re-use.

That's right, but when you run disk defragmenter the space the files were using is filled with random data ie the files are put onto the hard drive in binary and to write over them the defragmenter writes a random series of binary digits. But like I said previously, the file isn't completely lost even after it's written over. Some hardware data recovery systems can detect original data that has been overwritten 35 times.
