Deleted emails

When I delete an email that was not opened from my inbox it goes to the
deleted items folder. When I delete an email that I read it permanently
deletes the email without going to the deleted folder just as if I held down
the shift key when deleting. I cannot find a switch to turn this on or off.

Check your View settings. Make sure it is set to show all Messages.
