delete vs purge

My machine with windows mail only deletes my emails even though it is an
imap server. All the other machines will put a cross through the email and
prepare it to be purged, but this machine just deletes it completely. I've
checked to maker sure it is set up as imap and not pop. Any suggestions?

All the other machines?
Under WinMail???

What you report is normal for *Outlook* and Outlook Express but not for
WinMail.

WinMail works different from Outlook.
The behaviour depends on the setup of the IMAP-Server.

It basically works as follows
- If a mail is deleted it will be placed in the folder for deleted item
(as specified in the account's settings for the "special folders". It
will be marked as deleted on the IMAP-server but not purged ;
- if one deletes the mail with Shift+Del it will not pit into the folder
for deleted items, it will be purged immediately;
- if one deletes the items in the "deleted items" folder things will be
purged on the server.

It may take a while until the purging is executed in the server.
With my main account with my university it works immediately.
With a freemail account I hold in addition it takes a bit longer.

I can monitor this f.e. with Outlook.

not pop. Any suggestions?

Nothing has to dine except emptying the "deleted items" folder in a
regular basis.
No extra action needed as with OL* or OE.
