Delete text by typing, backspace or return

I used to be able to highlight text in a Word document with my mouse and then
delete it by typing new text or using the backspace or return keys. One day
this stopped working. Any ideas on where the settings for this would be?

Tools > Options > Edit > "Typinig replaces selection".
