Delete item from Registry

H

Hal Wexler

Attempted to remove "Wild Tangent" malware using Spybot S& D.
Removed the application but the registry trace remains. It's listed
under HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Wild Tangent.

Each time I boot-up I get an error message indicating the process
could not find the Wild Tangent software. Once the error message
is gone the computer works well.

Can I delete the Wild Tangent folder in the Registry Left Pane without
fear of courting disaster?

TIA: Hal Wexler

Hey Hal -- Happy Holidays !

Adaware should handle it, but, I also suggest performing a TrendMicro Sysclean scan as well.

1) Download the following three items...

Trend Sysclean Package
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp

Latest Trend Pattern File.
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp

Adaware SE (free personal version v1.05)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

Create a directory.
On drive "C:\"
(e.g., "c:\New Folder")
or the desktop
(e.g., "C:\Documents and Settings\lipman\Desktop\New Folder")

Download Sysclean.com and place it in that directory.
Download the Trend Pattern File by obtaining the ZIP file.
For example; lpt283.zip

Extract the contents of the ZIP file and place the contents in the same directory as
sysclean.com.

2) Update Adaware with the latest definitions.
3) Disable System Restore
http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDocs/DisableSysRestore.htm
4) Reboot your PC into Safe Mode
5) Using both the Trend Sysclean utility and Adaware, perform a Full Scan of your
platform and clean/delete any infectors/parasites found.
(a few cycles may be needed)
6) Restart your PC and perform a "final" Full Scan of your platform using both the
Trend Sysclean utility and Adaware
7) Re-enable System Restore and re-apply any System Restore preferences,
(e.g. HD space to use suggested 400 ~ 600MB),
8) Reboot your PC.
9) Create a new Restore point

Is it listed under the Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs? If it is,
uninstall it there first, then delete all entries in the Registry.

Hi David,
Happy Holiday to you!!!
Used the Trend Micro utilities and Ad-Aware SE
They didn't do the trick with Wild Tangent, but did find a pair of trojans.
I now have a system that is the cleanest it has ever been.
I'll keep Sysclean around for future use.
Thanks again.
Hal

Hal:

Keep the URLs. Both SYSCLEAN.COM and the Pattern Files are updated. The Pattern Files can
be updated 1 to three times per day. SYSCLEAN.COM has a longer period between updates. So
keep the URLs and download when you need to.
