Delete highlighted text

I thought it was possible to highlight a line or more than 1 line of text and
then hit the delete key to delete it, but it can't seem to get it to work. I
get a message done in the application status bar, asking Delete block N/Y?
This never happened before or at least I don't remember it happening.
