Is there a way to delete an item without sending it to the "Deleted Items"
folder?

I like to save all of the real messages that I receive in my deleted items
folder because I always find myself, months later, looking for something that
I deleted that I never thought that I'd need again. But I have started
receiving so much spam (200 messages/day) that the size of my deleted items
folder has grown ridiculously in the last year.

hold down the shift key then press delete
Or, since you said you want to keep some of the items you do receive, you
may want to consider making a new folder, ie a subfolder of your inbox or
just a new folder. You could move the emails you want to keep to that new
folder, then all the spam and other stuff you dont want will be in you
deleted items (when you delete it from your inbox of course). You could then
go into your options and check the box for "Empty deleted items folder upon
exiting." If you have Outlook 2003, that option is in Tools > Options,
"Other" tab, and its the first thing in that window. That deletes everything
in your del. items folder when you close outlook, I believe it does give a
confirmation though when you close.
