Leonard F Kiesling

using win 98se, dell xpst-450 desktop, 6+ yrs old. pentIII, 450mhz, 384 ram,
13 gig drive, I.E. 6.0.

i deleted cookies via i.e. properties> delete cookies.

in my c:\windows\cookies i still show 1307 items. all cookies except an
"index.dat" file.

just wondering why the cookies weren't removed using i.e. properties option
to "delete cookies". i applied 3 times.

can i safely manually delete the cookies?

thank you, len kiesling

Hi,
You can safely go to the Cookies folder and delete those cookies manually.

You may have a corrupted Cookies folder. Delete it from dos and a new one
will be created on restart.

See: http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm Note that you don't have to
delete temp or tempor~1 or history if you only want to delete the Cookies
folder. The choice is yours.

Hope this helps,

thank you for reply!

not sure about dos method of deleting cookies folder. could it be deleted
thru explorer (& placed in recycle, just in case something goes wrong) &
then complete a restart?

or, if i just manually delete the cookies, should the index.dat file be
deleted also?

thank you. len kiesling

Hi,
You won't be able to delete the Cookies folder from Windows Explorer.

After 6 years, your Cookies folder is overdue for a deletion. This should
resolve the inability to delete cookies. By deleting the Cookies folder, the
index.dat file will also be deleted and recreated- a fresh start all around.

Sorry, the instructions at http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm aren't
as complete as I thought.

Try this [Win 98]
- - - -
Restart in Ms-Dos Mode
From C:\> (type and press Enter after each command)

cd\windows
smartdrv
deltree cookies

Restart (Ctrl-Alt-Del)
- - - -
