delete a file and it is still there

When I delete a file in XP, it seems to just stay there and only disappears
after quite a long time and I refresh the display. Any idea why?

My wife complained the other day that she deleted a file and it was still
there. Then she looked in the recycle bin and it was there too. Back to the
original folder - still there. Two copies?? Eventually it settled down to
just one copy in the recycle bin - but it took a while.

Can anyone help me understand?

Thanks for the reply.

Just about any normal file. Word, excel, txt. Not big files - just a few k.
At first I thought I was going mad, but it is really happening.

Open Windows Explorer and select the C drive, right click and select
Properties, is there a long delay before the properties window opens?

As for the file issue does pressing the F5 key immediately after you delete
a file (refresh) help?
