Delayed Write Failures

Our setup is as follows:
Windows XP Pro, SP 1, all latest and greatest patches.
Windows 2000 SP 4 file server with Ultra SCSI attached disk array.
switched ethernet 100 LAN
SMC Barricade 7008ABR NAT router latest firmware, 10/100 WAN port.

The Windows XP client machine is on a segmented private network behind
the Barricade. The WAN port of the barricade is plugged into our LAN
(eseentially a private LAN off our corporate lan).
We're having DWFs with two specific applications.
First, Visual Sorce Safe 6 with SP5; coders at this workstation are
contantly getting DWFs while attempting to check-in projects to the
VSS db on the file server.
Second, a proprietary data collection software attempting to write
through the NAT to the file server. Almost constant DWFs. THis
software has been reconfigured to collect the data points to the local
hard drive, and then copy the finished file to the file server. No
problems with that.
Copying files to and from the file server yields no DWFs. No one else
on the corporate LAN has any DWF problems with the file server.
A quick pervue of PerfMon shows a 100Mbits connection when copying
data through the NAT.
ANy ideas would be greatly appreciated. I've tried the work arounds
suggested by MS in KB 321733 and related articles to no avail.

There are several articles and workarounds for this error on Microsoft's
Knowledge Base website. You could try searching there. I've been getting
those errors ever since I installed XP Pro on my system, but none of the MS
workarounds worked for me. Your configuration is much different than mine
though, and one of the fixes pertains specifically to systems connected to
LANs, so it might be more helpful to you. Good luck.

FYI, every hotfix or workaround that pertains to DWFs that MS has in
their KB has been tried to no avail.

None of the MS fixes correct the issue for myself or most others I've
found complaining of this same/similar issue.

I am looking for someone (MICROSOFT?) to correct this issue.

Here is the information that I have available to demonstrate that this
problem mainly appears to be related to Windows XP and Large Hard
Drives.

There is so much different affected hardware (on XP) that it is
difficult to find a real lowest common denominator. So far I have not
found anyone claiming to have this issue on Windows 2000. I'm not
saying that someone doesn't have the issue, I just have not found a
link on the Web saying so. That does show that at least XP is one
common denominator.
There appear to be more people with a ATI cards complaining of this
issue then there are with other video cards. That would tend to
indicate that ATI video cards "may" be at least partially another
common denominator. Maxtor and Western Digital hard drives appear to
be mentioned more then any others but I would guess that this issue
effects all new large EIDE/ATA drives that require 48Bit addressing to
use.

I am unable to find the KB on Maxtor's site but I've included the URLs
from Western Digital that at least acknowledge the issue.

So far though it appears that NO ONE (Promise, Western Digital,
Maxtor, Microsoft, etc) has done much about it. The KB articles
suggest a few things, but most of the suggestions are futile for
everyone. So far I have not found anything that CONCLUSIVELY fixes
the problem for EVERYONE involved.

I have not modified the Program memory settings in the Advanced tab,
they are as set by the XP installation.
On my system I get event viwer errors and system freezes.
Disk Management says the WD1200 is Healthy (but at risk)
There are physical clunking sounds at random times from the Hard
Drive/s
When system was running Windows 2000 and only WD1200 and WD800 there
was no such issue with Delayed Write Failed
If I unplug the new WD250 and plug in my old WD800 with Windows 2000
and use the built-in IDE ports on the Motherboard there are no Delay
Write issues and the occassional clunking sound goes away too.
Once I plug the new WD2500 back into the Promise Ultra100 TX2 the
issue comes back.
