Delayed Write Failure

I'm getting delayed write failures in WinXP Pro with a 200 Gig
SATA drive - I can access files on this drive for a short period up to
the point when the failure occurs, but after this I can only list
directories and examine directory properties, but I can't modify or
access any files whatsoever.

My initial thoughts were a failing drive or a required BIOS
update, however, and here's the sticking point, the box is dual boot,
and any flavour of Linux can access and modify any file on the drive
in question.

I'm assuming therefore that this is a Windows driver problem
and I'm going to investigate it as such.

I'm wondering if anyone else has come across this, and has
come up with a solution. This is for curiosity, really, as I'll be
shortly replacing the processor and mainboard - it's an old Abit AT7
Max2! Of course, it would be nice to think I won't need to replace
the drive, though.

Many thanks in advance,
Chris M.

I'd blame a couple of Windows XP Critical Update Patches from mid-December 2005,
but this is the first time I've seen this problem for a SATA drive. Be careful,
Win XP is quickly wrecking your drive (and it may be unformatable after too
long!); backup your stuff and expect USB 2.0 external drives to behave the same
way as what you've described now for your SATA drive, after the first use. Crap
OS!
