Delay after every winXP boots waiting for network to connect

Hi all,

this is a strange one and I'll try to explain it as best as I can.

First, my setup

Asus P5PE-VM
E6400 dual 2 core
2 gig of mem (kingston PC3200)
Sapphire X1950pro 512mg (no diff with old card) (AGP)
HD1 200gig Maxtor (IDE133)
HD2 120gig Maxtor (IDE133)
G15kb, MX510 mouse
DRU-810UT sony USB dvd writer

Network is a Yukon Marvell (onboard)

Everytime I boot, I get to the desktop after about 30 secs or so, and icons
starts appearing in the notification area (antivirus, ProcessExplorer etc)
*but* there is always a long delay (from 40 to 60 seconds) /*before*/ the
network notification will show up.. once it does, THEN zolealarm, and other
notifications show up as well.

So in essence, even though I get the desktop within 30 to 40 seconds, it
takes me about 2 minutes to really have my computer ready to use. If I try
to use it before the network notification is up, I get long delays on some
applications, and others will just wait until the network is connected, not
before.

I've tried to optimize my boot with bootvis, tunexp etc, but same results...
I get the desktop perhaps a bit faster, but still got to wait another minute
or so for the network to connect.

I've also tried to play with the different settings of the network card,
with no avails (tried changing all options one at a time, then reboot to
check).

BTW, Linux does *not* have this issue, and I can't try Vista yet :/

I've had this issue since about 1 week after I've got this new computer.
Not sure what caused it but I think its after I installed another app.
(can't recall which)

I've also tried booting without anything loading at boot time (removed apps
only, didnt' try to stop the services from loading at boot time yet). Tools
were MSConfig and AutoRuns (from Sysinternals/Microsoft). Same results.
(network notification takes about same amount of time to show up).

If you guys need me to send you some info (bootvis .bin trace file, or a
sysinfo32 etc) let me know.

Thanks in advance...

Forgot to mention that I don't have this issue when I boot in safe mode
(with network).

I'll keep working on it (removing services and testing the reboots).

Also, if anyone knows of a good profiling tool for boot times, let me know..
I've tried bootvis, but have no clue as to how to use/read its results.
(will try to find the doc on the internet in the meantime).

What type of IP addressing is beinig used --- Static IP or Dynamic IP?
And is NetBios enabled or disabled? Check for these in the Local Area
Connections properties box. Disabling NetBios might speed up the network
connection if a Static IP is being used.

If you dont have the problem in safe mode, try msconfig>Services>Hide All
MS........disable the rest
And test

I've give this a shot and let you know... already disabled a few services I
don't use (server, workstation and a few others relating to remote
networking) and it did give me a somewhat faster connection, but still
nowhere near where I used to be on my old PC.

More coming up soon.

Thanks for replying btw :)

Tried both with and without NetBios, same delays.

As I mentionned above, i gained a few seconds by removing some services, but
will try removing them all and see if I finally get the speed of network
detection I used to have on my older PC.

be back in a few

Update:

After trying to disable the services/apps at the same time then rebooting, I
had an access error, being told that I'd need to have admin access and retry
(hadn't read properly that I needed to HIDE the MS services and disable the
rest.. I tried to disable the whole thing).

when I did this and tried to reboot, the reboot time was about 5 mins (stuck
mostly in the Windows is loding screen)... and then realized I didn't have
network connections... I then reset MSConfig, rebooted (took another 5 mins
to shut down first) and then all came back to my old setup (normal with
network detection delay).

Since I hadn't read properly and thought I had done the right thing, I
decided to see if repairing (reinstalling over existing WinXP) would perhaps
fix it.... tried that from Windows, but got another access error when it
tried to copy a file, so that's when I decided to reinstall(repair) from
booting from the CD.

I'm now in the process of reinstalling the patches (Windows Update) and the
problem still exists -- once the updates are installed, I'll try MSConfig
*properly* this time :)

If that doesn't work, I'll install another copy of Windows on my computer
(got 10+ partitions, and one free) so it'll allow me to see if a clean WinXP
SP2 has the same issue or not.. if yes, then I'll stop losing sleep over this
and endure the delays (which aren't *that* bad.. just annoying). Just need
to make sure it's something that can be fixed or not.

reporting back in a few hours

Ok,

I've recalculated my delay after desktop once I had all the updates back.
Turns out I'm at about 20-25 seconds before the network is detected instead
of around 60 seconds. That's after removing some unwanted services but
mostly because of the reinstall of Windows.

Tried the MSconfig hideMS then remove the remaining services and the delay
was in the 15-20 seconds range.. after adding my required ones (Zonealarm,
Avast etc) I went up to 20-25 which is *much* better than before the install
of windows. Still not perfect, but easier to live with :)

I'll eventually install a fresh windows install onto another partition (if
I'm allowed to -- think I can but never tried to have 2 winxp installation on
the same PC before) to see if I can revert back to almost no wait time for
network detecting/connection.

but until I find the time/patience to do so, consider this a somewhat fixed
issue :)

thanks again for your replies.

regards
