If you're just trying to get data off, don't waste your time trying to fix
the OS.

Take the drive out, connect it via USB drive connector or external case to
another running XP system, and copy the data. This part may cost $20; you
don't need fancy. The external cases come with a special cable that has
three ends, and require two USB ports. The cable is supplied because a
single USB port can't provide enough power for a hard disk.

When you're done, make a decision about whether to keep the drive or wipe it
and reinstall the OS to a basic functional level.

If you're actually destroying the laptop, just keep the drive till you have
the data off, then either store it or destroy it.
