Defragmneting

When I defrag my 40g drive, 47% free space, it takes less
than 1 minute and doesn't seem to do as good as it used
to. what can I do to improve the dfrag.

I defrag as often as my computer seems to slow down, it
seems to help. when I do very much with it or every other
day or so sometimes a couple of times in a day. the
flashlight will come on when I click on my computer,
after the defrag it doesn't.
