OK, now I have the 'xp_inf_assoc.reg' file on the desktop, but when I right
click there is no 'merge' option. It is 5.05 KB and the icon is a folder . .

There are lots of problems with your computer....

Do this :
Start > Run > Type :
%windir%\regedit.exe "PathOfRegFile"
Click OK > Yes

Replace "PathOfRegFile" with the path of the "xp_inf_assoc.reg" file that is on
your desktop.

Then download :
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/xp_regfile.zip
Extract it
Click Start > Run
regedit.exe "PathOf the extracted file"
Click OK

Again, replace PathOf xpRegFile.reg with the file that you extracted from the
above link.

This will not solve your defragmenter problem ...

You are right, there are lots of problems with my computer . . when I tried
this last option, I got a message 'cannot import - error opening the file'.

To 'fix' these problems do I need a new pc, or just a new hard drive or can
I reload 'WindowsXP, and start over . . . thank you for all your time and
assistance. Much appreciated.
