defragmenting

C

cjowett

When I try to defragment my hard drive, I get the message that the program
is not installed to go to my Control Panel, and click Install/Uninstall tab,
but when I get there I see nothing about disk defragmenter. Can someone
help, please.

A

Ayush

Are you talking about Disk Defragmenter ?
If yes, try this :
Click Start > Run
Type "\Windows\Inf"
Click OK
Find the file named "dfrg.inf"
Right click the file > Choose Install

C

cjowett

Thanks, I tried that but I could not find a file names 'dfrg inf', but when
I put that into 'search' it did find a file, but I didn't know what to do
with it then.

Try this step by step :

1. Open Control Panel > Folder Options > View tab
2. Make sure "Show hidden files and folders" is selected
AND (This is not needed but do it)
Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files(Recommended)"
3. Click OK
4. Go to folder "C:\Windows\Inf" (If windows is installed on C:)
5. Right click dfrg.inf and choose install

Hi again . . whatever you attached was removed by OE, as it was an 'unsafe
attachment'. This note was at the top of the email back from you.

Click Start > Run
Copy/Paste the following line (Look for wordwrap):
rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132
%windir%\inf\dfrg.inf

I attached a shortcut that will do this, you can use that.

Sorry to be so much trouble . . .

That is completly fine.

Click Start - Run - Copy/Paste the following line and click OK
rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %windir%\inf\dfrg.inf

Alternately, you can start the installation by typing the following command
in Start, Run:

rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132
%windir%\inf\dfrg.inf

It's a single-line command. (watch for line wrap)

And to reinstate the "Install" command for .INF files, apply the .INF file
association fix from here:

Did that, and then I went to try defragment, and it still says 'defragment
is not installed', I also went to add/remove to see if it was there
somewhere to install this 'info' we just ran . . .

I did find a file under 'Windows Genuine Advantage Validations tool
Properties' that shows 3 damaged files . . . .

Sorry, I see that, but being very inexperienced in this jargo, I don't know
what to do. I did open the INF file in notepad, but where do I go from
there.

If it is too complicated , I am willing to give up if you are. Thank you.

Download http://www.dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/xp_inf_assoc.zip
Save it to Desktop. Double-click the file to unzip it.
Extract the enclosed file "xp_inf_assoc.reg" to Desktop
Right-click "xp_inf_assoc.reg" and choose Merge
Click Yes to confirm.

BTW, are you able to launch defragmenter by typing DFRG.MSC in Start, Run dialog?

OK, got it to desktop, but when I right click, I don't see a merge . . I see
open, explore, open with, send to, cut, copy, create shortcut, delete,
rename, and properties. My desktop file only says 'xp_inf_assoc.zip', where
you say I should have 'xp_inf_assoc.reg' . . do I have the right file on
the desktop . . . .

OK, now I have the 'xp_inf_assoc.reg' file on the desktop, but when I right
click there is no 'merge' option. It is 5.05 KB and the icon is a folder . .
