Defragmenting C Drive

IE 6...

When I try to defrag drive C I get this over and over:

"Reading drive information" ...then... "Drive's contents
changed: restarting".

I left it to defrag the entire night and those messages
were still repeating themselves the next morning.

What's preventing my computer from defragmenting?

Screen saver? Anti-virus program?

Crtl&Alt&Delete to see what you have running before you try to defrag.

All sys. seem to do that, there's probably programs
running "behind the scenes" you'll need to turn the
unimportant ones off, here's how you can turn them off if
you don't know how, go to start,run and type in
msconfig,then you will see a bunch of click the programs
that are obviously not part of the windows running
programs ie. systray..., unfortunatly I can't remember
what not to turn off so you'll have to wait for someone
else who can help you out more, but you can try turning
off what you can (minus the type mentioned above and see
if it helps.

Close all programs except explorer and systray, and re-run defrag.

Rick, that continual restarting of the drive scan occurs because some
running app keeps accessing the drive. This is entirely normal and is
virtually guaranteed to happen unless you first use Ctrl-Alt-Del to
show the running programs, select each program one at a time, and
close it using the End Task button. Do this for each task EXCEPT
Explorer and Systray. Be careful, of course, that you don't
accidentally key the Ctrl-Alt-Del keys twice in a row since that will
cause your computer to reboot. By stopping everything except Explorer
and Systray the scanning of the drive will complete without
interruption.

Hi Rick,

If the excellent advice already offered doesn't solve the problem (which is
true in my case), then try defrag in SAFEMODE. Even then, I've been advised
always to do SCANDISC first, then DEFRAG, all in SAFEMODE.
