Defragmentation

When I go to defragment my E drive I get an error message that states
that checkdisk is scheduled to run. Ergo, checkdisk cannot run. The
message states that I should go to <start+run> and type: "chkdsk /f"
w/o the quotation marks. When I do, I get a message that looks like
ancient Sumerian.

One problem: it is now 3:00pm and checkdisk is scheduled to run at
8:00am tomorrow. So it takes ± 20 hours to defrag 29.44gb HDD.

Please confirm and explain why it takes so long to defrag the drive.

Thank you,

Barry Karas

P.S. I have WinXP Pro with SP2.

if it's schedules to run in the morning and has not yet started, how is it
you figure it will take 20 hours to run?
Did you check your scheduled tasks to see if you do have it set to run on a
scheduled time?

You might try rebooting to see if the check disk will run. If it does, then
try defrag again, or, try both in Safe Mode.
