Defragment at boot

T

tatar

Windows XP SP3

I have set my PC to defragment at boot time by modifying the Registry as
follows:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

Right-click the RunOnce subkey and select New | String Value.

Name the value Defrag and press [Enter] twice.

Type Defrag.exe c: /f in the Value Data text box and click OK.

Now I want to remove this option but I do not know how?

You knew how to do it (I wouldn't have!) and you don't know that
all you have to do is delete the key? Or did you try that and it
keeps coming back? If so, you could try adding a DWORD line and
setting it to 0 (no).

Value is not available. On the right side I have Name: (Default); Type:
RRG_SZ ; Data: (value not set)
If I right click RunOnce on the left side I get the option New, Find,
Delete, Rename, Export, Permissions. If I select Find and enter Defrag it
serches the left side and locates a number of entries with Defrag in it but
I can not identify which one it is, if any.

Is the defragmenter starting every time you boot Windows?

If yes, download Autoruns by SysInternals and in the File menu have it
search for defrag and see what it finds. Be careful with Autoruns,
don't delete entries that you are unsure of.

Items in the RunOnce key do just that, they run once when you reboot the
computer then the contents of the key is deleted, they don't run again
on subsequent reboots. So, does the defragmenter automatically run
every time you reboot the computer?

If you add defrag to the RunOnce value, it will run once the next time
you reboot and then it will be deleted. That is why they call it
RunOnce.

After it runs, you will not find it in the registry. If it already
ran, it is gone so there is nothing for you to find and delete.

Even if it is in the registry, it still will not show up in msconfig
or AutoRuns (maybe it should, but it doesn't).

I don't see the value in adding defrag there (the way you indicated)
anyway - it will run when you reboot and you have no record of it
running. No log, nothing in the event viewer, it just runs and goes
away.

If you want defrag to run every time your system boots adding it to
RunOnce is not the way to do it, unless you want to add it to your
registry every time you reboot.

Do you think there is something happening when you reboot that you
don't understand? Perhaps a chkdsk where you see white writing on a
light blue background on every boot? That is something different.

What do you see that you think its not right and what are you trying
to accomplish?

Then you can get ideas on how to do what you want in a way that makes
sense.

A few tests I made show that you are right. I have mislead people by
insisting that it keeps defragmenting at every boot up. This was because it
took five minutes to bootup which I assume included extra time for
defragmenting. Apologies to all.

I did that but could not locate it. I also copied and saved it as word
document and searched for it without success. I shall go back and search

it again.

Well, how can you measure bootup time. It takes about one minute to ask for
my password, then an additional two minutes for Skype to becomes activated.
But it takes an additional two and a half minute before HDD stops flashing,
altogether five and a half minutes. I believe IE8 activity is what it takes
so long at the end. I did all the suggestions to shorten IE8 activilty.
Thanks.
