I was defragmenting my computer and it froze up after 47%
and I had to reboot. Now it won't go past the Windows XP
screen during the reboot. I tried getting into safe mode
and last known confriguration and it still won't work. Can
anyone help? I would sure hate to reformat my hard drive
and lose all my programs.

Try booting to the recovery console and run
chkdsk /r

It sounds like rebooting during the defrag corrupted or
deleted a file needed for windows to open properly.
Reinstalling Widows as a repair will not cause you to lose
all your programs. However if repairing the existing
installation is not given as a choice you would lose your
programs. There are programs to get around such problems
eg WinRescue which let you make a rescue boot floppy for
just your situation but it's too late for one of those now!

Dave, thank you very much. I tried what you suggested and
it worked like a charm.
